Is Kaiju No 8 Signaling a New Age of Monster Protagonists in Modern Anime?

Never thought I’d see the day when turning into a kaiju is actually the hero move instead of the city wrecking disaster. Kafka’s choice to embrace his monster side kinda flips the old monster anime formula on its head, making me think we’re entering some new territory for protagonists. On the flip side, it’s funny how Kikoru’s reaction to Kafka’s transformation is half awe, half “seriously, this dude?” It’s like the series wants us questioning who the real monsters are. Maybe humanitys fear of kaiju is getting more complicated on purpose. Anyone else feel like this series is cracking open a whole new monster playbook? I’m strapped in like I’m riding a kaiju’s tail—what do you hope happens next?

Kafka changing the game by being a kaiju protagonist makes me wonder if we’ll see more “monsters” who aren’t just mindless villains. It reminds me a bit of Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul, but even more in your face with the monster visuals. I hope the story digs deeper into society’s fear and maybe brings some kaiju allies into the mix!
